PAGASA eyeing possible first storm this year

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration yesterday announced that a low pressure area (LPA) it is monitoring inside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) has a “medium” chance of developing into a tropical depression today.

According to PAGASA’s 24-hour tropical cyclone formation outlook issued at 4 p.m. on June 6, the LPA was last estimated based on all available data 340 kilometers east of Virac, Catanduanes.

The state weather bureau added in its 24-hour public weather forecast that it expects the LPA’s trough to result in cloudy skies with scattered rains and thunderstorms in Quezon, Bicol, and parts of Visayas and Mindanao.

These could lead to possible flash floods or landslides due to moderate to, at times, heavy rains.

Meanwhile, the Southwest Monsoon affecting the country’s western section is forecast to bring cloudy skies with scattered rains and thunderstorms in Metro Manila, Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, MIMAROPA, Western Visayas, Negros Island Region, Zamboanga Peninsula, BARMM, and SOCCSKSARGEN.

PAGASA has since advised stakeholders to monitor its updates.
